1. Types of words

Here are the most common types of words in English:

- Verbs are words that tell us about actions, e.g.

            play, walk, eat, write

- Nouns are words for things and people, e.g.

            car, man, house, shirt, computer

- Adjectives are words to tell us more about nouns, e.g.

fast car, big house, new computer, old man

- Adverbs are words which tell us more about the verb, e.g.

You walk slowly.

John writes quickly.

She plays tennis well.

- Pronouns are words used in place of nouns. Personal pronouns are I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

- Conjunctions are words which join groups of words together

2. How to learn new words

Here are some ways to help you learn new words. Do you use any of these ways?

·         Write down all new words.

·         Note the type of word, e.g. people (n).

·         Write an example sentence with the word in it.

·         Write the translation if this helps you.

·         Check you remember all the words a week later!

·         Learn words in groups, e.g. opposites big-small, or words for food, e.g. steak-chicken.

·         Learn the words for things which are important to you.

·         Use a modern dictionary.

3. What can you use to learn new words?

Buy a special book. Only write in new words.

Buy a modern dictionary.

Read Internet pages, magazines and books in English.

Watch TV programmes in English when available.

Try to see films in English .
